Chicken Facts


• There are no hormone and no steroids in Australian chickens. They were banned in the 1960’s.


• All chickens raised in Australia are not kept in cages but are free to roam in barns with easy access to food and water.


• Australian chickens are not genetically modified but have improved over the years through good breeding.


• There is no avian influenza (bird flu) in Australia.


• All chickens sold in Australia are grown by Australian farmers.



Chicken is good for you

Chicken is high in protein, low in fat, low in kilojoules and low in cholesterol.  It contains many vitamins and minerals including protein, vitamin E, niacin, riboflavin, iron, zinc, phosphorous and magnesium. Chicken is a healthy choice for you and your family.



Food Safety

Refrigerate fresh chicken immediately and keep under 5°C.  Frozen chicken should be maintained under -15°C. Thaw frozen chicken in the fridge or microwave. Once thawed it cannot be re-frozen unless it is cooked then frozen. Wash hands thoroughly before and after handling chicken products.  Always store separately and use different utensils (chopping boards, knives, etc.) when preparing raw chicken and other products such as cooked products or fruit and vegetables that may not need further cooking. Wash hands and utensils in hot soapy water


Chicken must always be cooked thoroughly or well done. The juice should run clear with no pink tinges. It should be 75°C in the thickest part. If you need to keep the cooked chicken hot it should be kept at 60°C. If you need to cool or store cooked chicken, place it in the fridge as soon as the steam has evaporated. It should be used within two days.
